Why Are Rumi, Hafez, and Ferdowsi Craters on Mercury?

Rumi, Hafez, Ferdowsi, Saadi, and other major figures from the Persian literary world have namesakes on Mercury. This is not a poetic nickname for the planet: their names belong to officially recognized impact craters.

A study posted on March 30, 2026 brought these scattered names together and identified nine Mercury craters honoring poets connected to Persian, Tajik, and wider Persianate literary culture. The newest addition was approved in 2025, making this an unexpectedly current chapter in the afterlife of classical poetry.

Why does Mercury have craters named after poets?

Planetary features are not named randomly. The International Astronomical Union assigns a naming theme to each kind of feature on each world so scientists can use consistent, unambiguous names on maps and in research.

For Mercury, the official theme for impact craters is famous deceased artists, musicians, painters, and authors. Poets therefore fit naturally into the system. The IAU/USGS Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature is the authoritative catalogue for these approved names.

The result is a planetary map that reads like a vast international cultural index. Mercury has craters named for creators from many languages and countries—not because the planet is claimed by any one culture, but because its crater-naming convention celebrates artistic achievement.

The nine Persian and Persianate poet names on Mercury

The 2026 study catalogues the following nine names. Spellings follow the forms used in planetary nomenclature, which sometimes differ from the English spellings readers see in books:

  • Rudaki — the early Persian poet often associated with the beginnings of New Persian literary poetry.
  • Saadi — the Shirazi author of the Golestan and Bustan, whose ethical verse includes the famous “Bani Adam” passage.
  • Nizami — the master of narrative poetry whose Khamsa helped shape later storytelling across the Persianate world.
  • Rūmī — the thirteenth-century mystical poet known in Persian as Mowlana or Molavi. Our introduction to Rumi’s poetry explains his recurring language of love and spiritual transformation.
  • Navoi — Ali-Shir Nava’i, best known as a great Chagatai Turkic author but also a writer of Persian verse. His inclusion shows why “Persianate” is sometimes more precise than simply “Persian.”
  • Firdousi — the IAU spelling for Ferdowsi, author of the Shahnameh. See our guide to Iran’s Book of Kings.
  • Hafiz — the planetary spelling for Hafez of Shiraz, whose lyric poetry remains central to Persian reading and divination traditions.
  • Sanai — an influential early mystical poet whose work helped prepare the literary ground for later Sufi poetry.
  • Mahsati — the medieval poet Mahsati Ganjavi and the newest name in this group, added to Mercury’s map in 2025.

This does not mean these are the only poets from the region represented in space. The study focuses specifically on a set of Mercury impact craters and notes that other Iranian and Central Asian scholars and literary figures appear elsewhere in Solar System nomenclature.

Why are the spellings “Firdousi” and “Hafiz”?

Readers may expect Ferdowsi and Hafez, while planetary maps use Firdousi and Hafiz. These are transliteration differences, not different people.

Persian names do not have a single inevitable English spelling. A name can pass through different scholarly conventions and languages before it becomes an official map label. Once the IAU approves a planetary name, that spelling becomes the standardized geographic form used for the feature.

The distinction is useful when searching. “Ferdowsi crater” may lead to general references, while “Firdousi Mercury” matches the formal planetary name more precisely.

What is special about Firdousi crater?

NASA’s official Firdousi image page describes a crater about 96 kilometers (60 miles) across. It was named in March 2010 for Hakim Abu’l-Qasim Ferdowsi, the poet traditionally dated to about 940–1020 and revered for the Shahnameh.

The featured photograph was captured by the Narrow Angle Camera aboard NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft during its third Mercury flyby on September 29, 2009. The image shows chains of smaller secondary craters radiating from the impact site. NASA explains that their survival indicates Firdousi is comparatively young by Mercury’s geological standards: later impacts have not yet erased those radial chains.

The picture is also a helpful reminder that a planetary name and a geological feature are separate things. Ferdowsi did not “create” or discover the crater. The name honors him; the crater itself records an ancient collision on another world.

Rumi, Hafez, and Sanai are also geological places

The nine craters are not identical circles with different labels. According to the 2026 survey, they preserve varied chapters of Mercury’s geological history:

  • Rūmī crater contains evidence interpreted as an explosive volcanic vent and is crossed by a long scarp called Palmer Rupes.
  • Hafiz crater includes unusually dark material and “hollows,” shallow irregular depressions that are among Mercury’s distinctive landforms.
  • Sanai, roughly 490 kilometers across, is an ancient impact basin rather than a small, sharply defined crater.
  • Firdousi includes volcanic resurfacing as well as the bright radial patterns highlighted in spacecraft images.
  • Mahsati, the latest poet name added to the group, demonstrates that planetary nomenclature is still developing as maps improve and useful features receive formal names.

These details turn the names into more than trivia. Each label gives researchers a stable way to discuss a specific landscape, while the person honored becomes part of a shared scientific vocabulary.

How did scientists map these craters?

Mercury is difficult to study from Earth because it stays close to the Sun in our sky. Spacecraft transformed its maps. NASA’s Mercury overview explains that Mariner 10 made the first spacecraft visits in the 1970s. Decades later, MESSENGER flew past Mercury three times and then orbited it for four years, returning detailed imagery and measurements before its mission ended in 2015.

The adoption dates summarized in the 2026 paper trace that exploration history. Some Persian-poet crater names were approved after Mariner 10; later additions followed the MESSENGER flybys and orbital survey. In other words, better planetary mapping created more opportunities for cultural names to enter the official record.

Why this matters beyond astronomy

Names are practical tools, but they are also acts of memory. A scientist can refer to lava deposits in Firdousi or hollows in Hafiz without discussing literature at all. Still, each use quietly carries a poet’s name into another discipline, language, and century.

That cross-cultural reach feels especially appropriate for Persian poetry. Manuscripts, recitations, translations, music, migration, and family traditions have long carried the poems far beyond their places of origin. Planetary nomenclature extends that movement to a literal map of another world.
